Olivia's Miles For Smiles
Story
My name is Olivia (Lolly) and in 2009, whilst living in Singapore, I met a very brave little 3-year-old girl, Claudia, who was undergoing treatment for Leukemia. Inspired by her courage, I decided I wanted to make a difference and help other children suffering from childhood cancer.
The idea of Olivia's Miles for Smiles is to ride your bike as far as you can, wherever you are, and ask your family and friends to support and sponsor you. You can set yourself a personal distance goal and remember when you are riding and your body is aching, the children you are raising funds for don't have a choice to pack up and go home, they have to continue living with their pain and suffering until there is a cure.
In 2009 I rode 20km by myself at the age of 8 years. Each year the ride has grown - in the collective funds raised, the number of people who have participated and the distance.
Last year we rode 100km and raised over $5,300 bringing the total we have raised for Children’s Cancer Institute to $25,977 in just 5 years. That’s me presenting the cheque in the photo above.
This year is the 6th anniversary of the ride and on Sunday, 30 November in Centennial Park I’m planning to ride 120kms in 6 hours. That's approximately 32 laps - only stopping for food and drinks. It would be wonderful if more people were able to participate and together we can raise even more valuable funds to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than us.
My target is to raise $13,000 which would fund a specialist incubator to grow healthy cancer cells for vital research.
If you would like to help me raise valuable funds for research into childhood cancers, you can make a donation by clicking the DONATE button or you can create your own fundraising page and join my team.
Thank you for your support and I hope to see you in Centennial Park.
Activity
Children's Cancer Institute
Every year more than 950 children and adolescents will be diagnosed with cancer in Australia.
Every week nearly three Australian children will die of cancer.
Children’s Cancer Institute exists solely to put an end to childhood cancer through medical research. We don’t just hope to do it. We will do it.
It’s not if. It’s when.
